Moral Emotions and Partnership
July 25, 2011We have put out our paper on Moral Emotions and Partnership.
We investigate one-shot interactions between strangers, and aim to understand trustworthiness and its determinants. We answer two questions: Is trustworthy behavior motivated by a trustee’s internal voice, her conscience? Is trustworthy behavior motivated by a trustee’s concern for how the trustor perceives her?
We implement an experimental design that distinguishes between these two moral emotions, guilt and shame, and identifies implications for pro-social behaviour.
We give a positive answer to the first question and a negative answer to the second; participants’ disposition to guilt is the determinant of pro-social behaviour.
